FAQ SECTION
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I Know if My Car’s Brakes Need Repairing?
Brakes should be inspected every service, however if your brakes are squealing, squeaking or grinding in any way then book your car in for a free brake inspection.Â
If you notice any of the following, it’s time to get your brakes checked:
- a squealing or grinding noise when braking
- any vibration in your steering wheel when braking
- the brake pedal feels harder or softer than it used toÂ
- the brakes feel sluggish or take longer to respond
- the dashboard brake or ABS lights are onÂ
If any of these apply, get in touch with PCTA to get your brakes checked urgently.
How do you change brake pads?
Replacing brake pads is a straightforward job for a trained mechanic. Worn pads reduce stopping power and can damage your rotors if left too long.
Here’s how it’s done:
The car is jacked up and wheels are removed
The caliper is unbolted and moved aside
Old pads are taken out and replaced with new ones
The caliper is reinstalled and the system is tested
We’ll also inspect the rotors and the rest of your braking system. If you’re unsure whether your brakes need attention, book in for a quick check.
How Often Should I Replace My Brake Pads?
Brake pads typically need to be replaced every 30,000 to 70,000 km, but this can vary depending on driving habits, the type of vehicle, and the quality of the brake pads.
If you hear squealing or grinding noises, or notice reduced braking performance, it’s a sign your brake pads might be worn. At PCTA, we can assess the condition of your brake pads and recommend the right time for a replacement to ensure your safety.
What Happens if I Ignore Warning Signs of Brake Issues?
Ignoring brake warning signs, like unusual noises or a soft brake pedal, can lead to more serious damage and expensive repairs. Worn brake pads can affect your car’s braking distance and compromise your safety. Prolonged neglect may damage the rotors, calipers, and other braking components.
At PCTA, we urge you to have your brakes inspected as soon as you notice any signs of trouble to avoid costly repairs and keep you safe on the road.
How long does a brake service take?
Most brake pad replacements take about 1 to 2 hours. It depends on the vehicle, how seized the bolts are, and whether the rotors also need replacing.
Pads only: Around 1 hour
Pads and rotors: Closer to 2 hours
Complex vehicles or seized components may take longer
We’ll give you an estimated time before we start. You’re welcome to wait in the lounge or drop off and pick up later.
How much does it cost to replace front and back brake pads?
Brake pad replacement costs vary based on vehicle type and pad quality. Most common cars fall within this range:
Front or rear pads: $180 to $280
Both front and rear: $360 to $550
We use quality pads that meet or exceed factory standards. You’ll always get a quote before we begin
How much does it cost to repair or replace brake rotors
Rotors can often be machined flat, but if they’re too thin or damaged, they must be replaced. Pricing depends on the car and whether it’s front or rear.
Machining rotors: $80 to $150 (pair)
Replacing front rotors: $280 to $500 (including pads)
Replacing all four: $600 to $1,000+
We’ll inspect your brakes and give you clear advice. If your steering shudders or brakes feel uneven, it might be time to check the rotors.
